This research aims to analyze the perception of audiences regarding the coverage of global environmental issues in Kenyan Standard and Nation newspapers. With the main objective of examining the views of audience on environmental coverage by the Standard and Nation newspapers, the study employed a qualitative research method, utilizing in-depth interviews with purposive sampling to select a sample (N=30) participants. Data collection was through in-depth interviews, and analyzed using qualitative thematic analysis. The study findings revealed that global environmental issues are underreported in the Kenyan leading print media while political issues remains in the lead. The study also established that the fewer environmental issues covered were highly politicized thus the public remain disadvantaged. The study concludes that due to limited coverage, low prioritization and high politicization of environmental and climate change issues, the publics’ understanding of environmental issues remain narrow. The study recommends further research to establish the correlation between reading about environmental issues in the Kenyan leading newspapers and the actual actions taken by audiences toward environmental conservation. This study will be vital in building up literature and contributing to the existing body of knowledge on newspapers and environmental coverage. The study draws from the gatekeeping media theory.
