Abstract

Child sexual abuse is becoming more devastating in Pakistan. The criminal justice system is an important tool to curb this evil but the people in our country are not well aware of this problem. Law and media have become inescapably intertwined. Because a relatively small proportion of the public has direct experience with the justice system, public knowledge and views of law and the legal system are largely dependent on media representations. In fact, law, crime, and justice are frequent topics of media coverage.

Around the world, media is the most effective avenue for creating awareness on various issues like education, human rights and protection of children. Media has become a soft power in the 21st century. Media is the fourth pillar of democracy along with the legislature, executive and the judicial system of our country. Electronic media has emerged as the popular medium of communication which is highly accessible to a vast majority of people across the globe. Electronic media can create mass awareness about significant issues pertaining to child sexual abuse and exploitation through telecasting spots, special features, serials, producing films, documentaries, and feature films on this issue by creating public opinion to prevent sexual violence against children.

This paper will consist of two parts. Part one will discuss the role of electronic media in covering child sexual abuse cases. This will give rise to the question; does an electronic medium reflect the prevailing patterns of child sexual abuse? Part two will discuss the role of electronic media as a medium to launch awareness campaigns on child sexual abuse.  This part of the paper will address the question; will electronic media influence child sexual abuse through awareness campaigns? The conclusion summarizes the main findings. A literature review method will be adopted for this research paper.
